The Founding of Fostoria's Only Church
"In circa, 1893, the Milwaukee Railroad was
extended from Spencer to Spirit Lake, Iowa and a depot was built at
Fostoria. The land on which the town of Fostoria was to be built was
owned at the time by Isaac and Frank Foster.
Methodist meetings were being held in the
Shelton-Henderson school house, one mile east, of Fostoria, from
1894-1896 with the Rev. W. S. Cannon as pastor. (Pictured to left.)
On March 4, 1896 the Quarterly Conference of the
Spencer District met at the parsonage in Spencer and the Articles of
Inc for the Fostoria Linden Methodist Church were filed and the
Board of Trustees were elected. On April 15, 1896 the Building
Committee met to receive bids for the construction of a church and
the contract was awarded to B.S. Taylor of Spencer for $1,199.00.
The town was incorporated Jan 30, 1912. It is the
outgrowth of a pioneer settlement begun in 1869 by Thomas Berry,
Peter Nelson, G. W. Clark and the Jospeh O'brien families. Excerpt
