About Clay County ~
Welcome! We've been preparing for your
arrival since December 28, 1846 ~ this is also the date that Iowa became
the 29th state and made Des Moines our Capital.
Capital:
Founded at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers; originally
a military outpost.
Nickname: Iowa's nickname,
The Hawkeye State, was adopted early in the state's history. It is
believed that two Iowa promoters from Burlington popularized the name.
Clay County: The first
settlers arrived in Clay County in 1855, but the county was n
ot
officially organized until 1858. In May of 1860, Peterson was selected as
the county seat. The rolling hills in the southern portion of Clay
County, however made horse and buggy travel difficult. In 1866, the
first settlers made their way to flat prairie area which is now known as
Spencer. In 1871, the area residents officially moved the the county
seat to Spencer and it has remained the center of activity for all of Clay
County. The Spencer courthouse was built in 1901 and continues to
serve the county well.
