What's Necessary in a Quilting Sewing Machine?

Depending on how much quilting you expect to undertake and how much time you'd like to spend, a suitable machine may cost you less than $200 all the way up to $10,000 and more. Fortunately, machines towards the low end are more than adequate for anyone but the most devoted quilters. At the lowest end, you do not even need a machine at all. Despite many tedious hours, some people still favor old fashioned hand quilting for real pride in skillfullness. At the next phase, conventional sewing machines are fine for most, if not all, of the phases of producing a quilt. From there you may step up to a long-arm quilting machine. These typically cost you about $1000 to $2000. Frames, which move the quilt and machine, roughly double that cost. Finally, you will find computerized and mechanized machines that can complete a quilt practically on their own.

As additional background, here's the 3 main stages associated with quilt making as well as the sewing machine capabilities they require.

Squares

The very first step is making the individual squares. These can in fact be just about any shape, and lots of individuals consider this to be the most creative step. Their design involves the selection of fabric color and pattern, as well as additional options such as applique and embroidery.

Making squares places minimal requirements on the sewing machine. Here you may use almost any sewing machine. With numerous options to be inventive, you might even make your squares by hand assuming you have plenty of time. Even so, you might want a machine which does embroidery if you want that in your quilts. Although more costly than the usual simple machine, today the added cost is reasonably small and these machines can be easy to use.

Square Piecing

Putting the squares together will be the subsequent phase, referred to as piecing. This can also be very artistic as you may combine colors and textures into patterns for the overall quilt. Most sewing machines will also be good with regard to piecing, and are a big help given that the actual sewing may become tedious. With your squares comming together into a large quilt, a bed-extension can often be handy in managing things. Long-arm machines do well at controlling large quilts, but are far from essential.

Final Quilting

The last phase sews together a backing cloth layer, the batting, along with the top layer of pieced squares. This is the step the term quilting literally means. It requires a huge number of stitches and so nowadays it is almost never done by hand. So nearly everyone will do machine quilting at this stage. A quilting machine will need to satisfy a couple of special requirements for this stage. Even so, numerous general-purpose machines can tackle the final quilting. Most significantly the machine will need to have a quilting foot in addition to a quilting stitch. Quilting feet can be purchased as accessories for many sewing machines.

With regular sewing machines it is usually time consuming plus a bit frustrating to manipulate the big quilt inside the small reach of the sewing head. A long-arm machine will make this go much faster and more easily. Having a frame which moves your machine one direction and rolls the quilt the other way can make this last stage a breeze. Not too many people possess that combination. They really are very pricey not to mention take up a considerable amount of space. It's widespread to pay for another person having a long-arm setup to do the final quilting once you have sewn the squares and piecing yourself.

Picking a Particular Machine

Not unexpectedly, the majority of people choose the more affordable end of the spectrum. Regardless of cost, make sure the brand name and the particular model you end up picking has got the quilting stitches and feet you will need, and is also tough as well as dependable. Singer is needless to say the most well-known brand name. Pfaff, Juki, Janome, and Brother also are well known as well as well liked companies of quilting sewing machines. Any quilting machine must also have sufficient power to handle the thick stack of top fabric, batting, and back fabric. Most good-quality models will be good, particularly when they're known to take care of denim as well as other hefty materials. Finally, try to find customer evaluations with an eye out for all that reference quilting.
