Our Organization:  ATA

The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) is the premier North American organization dedicated to the martial arts discipline of taekwondo, and is the founding organization of other international affiliates that include the World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU) and the Songahm Taekwondo Federation (STF). Counting both the U.S. and worldwide, our organizations have over 1,500 independently owned and operated licensed schools and clubs, and we are beginning to register over 300,000 members.

Since the first class was taught many years ago, the focus of our program has remained the same: to provide students the highest quality martial arts instruction available in a safe and positive learning environment that people of all ages can enjoy. Our instructors combine excellent student instructor ratios with state of the art training facilities. This has helped establish ATA schools and clubs as the leaders in the martial arts industry. Each instructor is a graduate of an instructor program that represents more than thirty years of research and development. He or she will be with you every step of the way to help you reach your individual goals (and maybe even reach some new goals you never before thought possible).

Eternal Grand Master H. U. Lee of The American Taekwondo AssociationOur Style:  Songahm Taekwondo

“Martial Art” is a broad term that encompasses many styles of the fighting arts that have been developed over hundreds of years. Songahm Taekwondo is not just another martial art. It is the world’s largest centrally administered martial art. This system of teaching and training, developed by Grand Master H.U. Lee and his staff, is unequaled in the martial arts community. During its early years, the ATA used the Chang-hun style of forms. Grand Master Lee wanted forms that demonstrated the strength and beauty of kicking techniques so he created 18 Songahm forms designed to emphasize kicks.

Songahm Taekwondo focuses on developing the mind and the body. To say it is just self-defense would lose most of the valuable ideas and philosophy. Values and life skills are taught along with the physical requirements in order to develop in every way. The Songahnm curriculum facilitates a smooth progression from one rank to the next. Students begin classes feeling apprehensive on doing simple blocks, strikes and kicks. A few years later they are doing complicated moves with ease.

A beginner does not focus on being a skilled martial artist within a month or two, as a strong foundation in Taekwondo must be built first. Trying to advance beyond your level without proper guidance is like building a house on concrete that has not dried. Though the house may still stand, the foundation would not be as strong and the appearance of the house may not be as presentable.

The ATA and its affiliated organizations help build a strong foundation of Songahm Taekwondo in each of its members, a foundation from which advancement in both the martial art (mind and body) and in self defense can be built and added on to in perpetuity.
